Yamanaka Pass (the oldest Hokuriku “Expressway”)
In the Nara Period, travellers from the capital Nara who were entering the ancient Koshi Province (present-day Hokuriku) passed through Yamanaka Pass from Tsuruga. This is the oldest official route in Hokuriku that passed through Echizen. This route was also referenced in the Manyoshu, and it is sometimes called the Manyo Route because of this.
