Cycling in Nanjo: Heal your spirit with the beautiful scenery! (spring to autumn)

“Rent a bicycle and enjoy the rural scenery! Bicycles are available for rental at the roadside station Minami-Echizen Town Sankairi. Riding a bicycle here allows you to experience Minami-Echizen Town in a way that is easy to miss from a car or train. Since it is an electronically assisted bicycle, even longer rides are not strenuous.”

From July to August, lotus flowers are in full bloom in the Nanjo area. Cycling by the vast lotus fields is sure to become a wonderful summer memory (just don’t forget to take precautions against the heat). Although it is a little far away, we also recommend Hanahasu Park, a popular tourist destination. You can also experience the other seasons, with cherry blossoms along the Hino River in spring and the beautiful leaves in autumn. An excellent way to spend your day as you are relaxed and soothed by the beautiful Japanese countryside.

For Those Who Like Making Things!

Glass Float Net Making: A unique fishing village experience! (available year-round)

Here is a unique activity you won’t find outside of a coastal fishing village like Kono: making a net around a glass float. The glass floats, which were used to keep nets afloat and as a marker, come from Otaru, a coastal city in Hokkaido that Kono is on good terms with. A guide from the Kono Kitamaebune Shipowners’ Street Association will teach you how to make it. The finished creation can be used as decor or as a flower vase, and it makes a great souvenir.

For the Active Types!

Lotus Flower Harvesting: Getting muddy with these beautiful flowers! (summer)

There is a place in the Nanjo area of Minami-Echizen Town where lotus flowers are grown, a somewhat rare sight in Japan. The flowers bloom in summer and are sent to various places to be used in the Bon Festival, one of the most important annual Buddhist events. The vibrant pink blossoms are harvested early in the morning before they open with the warming sun, and waking up early in the cool morning air to harvest them is a pleasant experience. You can also try tying the harvested flowers in bundles for shipping. This activity is only available in July and August and wading boots and sickles are available to rent. After, we recommend taking a refreshing soak at Hanahasu Onsen Somayama (closed on Tuesdays).

Try to master it for yourself and you’ll see what the fuss is about! This experience is only available in November.
